Warm-Up Scheme Hits Twin Targets

July 22nd, 2009

The Warm Up NZ scheme, which began on July 1 and is being run by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, appears to be hitting the Govt’s twin targets of stimulating insulation of homes, and creating jobs. EECA says demand is very high. Since the programme started , EECA has received nearly 8500 calls and over 90,000 unique visitors to its websites. Insulation companies are hiring staff, with Eco Insulation, one of the North Island’s largest Govt-selected providers taking on 50 unemployed workers.

General Manager of Eco Insulation Paul Apperley says workers are going from the dole to earning $1000 a week. Another firm Right House reports it has taken 25 people off the dole in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington, and the firm is looking to expand in Christchurch, with the prospects of employing 10 people there. Selina Watson, manager of 16-branch Premier Insulation says 80 people had come off the dole to join her firm.

Thousands of homeowners are tapping into the Govt’s $323m home insulation and heating fund. Some reports indicate 4000 homes have been insulated or heated since the Govt subsidy was signalled. Fletcher Building, which makes and distributes Pink Batts has increased production in Auckland to 24 hours a day seven days a week to keep pace with demand.
