NZ Carbon Offsets: Strong Interest In Carbon-Farming Forestry Grants

October 28th, 2009

MAF reports strong uptake in the third round of its Afforestation Grant Scheme tender, with grants worth just over $4m granted to 42 projects for 2688 hectares of new forest in 2009 and 2010. Tenders were let at an average price of $1789 per hectare in the high sequestration pool and $650 per hectare in the low sequestration pool and allocations go to projects in the Waikato, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu/Wanganui, Wellington, Nelson/Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland regions.

The 68 tenders received in this round were double the number received in the previous round. Since the AGS got underway in June last year, more than $6.9m has been allocated to projects covering almost 4500 hectares. All available funding has now been allocated for the 2010/11 financial year, with some 16 successful projects held over for funding at the next round of tenders, which are scheduled to close on 30 March 2010, for projects starting in the 2011/12 financial year.
