New Zealand Exploration: Kiwi Software In Seismic Survey Work

January 19th, 2010

A Singapore firm contracted by the Govt to conduct a $12m seismic survey of the Pegasus Basin and several other potentially oil or gas bearing sub-sea structures is using software developed in Wellington by GNS Science business unit Globe Claritas to check the survey is going to plan. Globe Claritas COO David Darby estimated the 9-person firm has a 5% share of the world market for software used by oil and gas explorers to analyse seismic data.

Reflect Geophyiscal and Global Claritas customer Quantum Geoservices is carrying out the survey for Crown Minerals. Quantum is using the software on board the survey ship Bergen Resolution which the Govt has contracted for the summer to conduct seismic work in the Pegasus Basin, the Great South Basin. Depending on which way the vessel leaves NZ it will acquire reconnaissance lines across either the Challenger Plateau and Bellona Trough area, or the outer Taranaki Basin and Northland East Slope Basin. The raw seismic data along with interpretation reports will be offered free to oil companies which may be able to bid for exploration licences.
