Huge Waikato River Clean Up Spend Coming

June 2nd, 2009

One of the biggest single pieces of new spending in the Environment Vote is the $60m-odd to be pumped into cleaning up the Waikato River. The projects were all committed under the last Govt, with spending peaking in the period 2009-2012. A total of $40m represents the Crown’s contribution to the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu River Trust, which will fund cultural and environmental projects that restore the relationship between the Iwi and the river, and protect sites of significance and environmental habitats. A further $6m is for Iwi engagement in co-managing the river, and a total of $14m is committed to the Waikato River Clean-Up Fund.
