Call To Scrap Road User Charges For Diesel Cars
December 10th, 2008
The Govt is being urged to abolish road user charges for diesel cars to help reduce greenhouse gases. Hyundai Motors NZ is leading the call, based on the performance of its diesel-powered Hyundai i30 in the recent AA Energywise Rally. The Supreme Winner of the 1641km rally was the Honda Civic Hybrid which cost $111.72. But Hyundai Motors NZ Executive Director Philip Eustace notes if the Hyundai i30 had been exempt from road user charges, it would have cost just $96.66 to complete the rally, $15.06 less than the Civic Hybrid. Eustace adds the Hyundai i30 emitted less CO2 than the Civic Hybrid (108gm/km versus 109.6gm/km). Road user charges are on the policy agenda of the new National-led Govt and Eustace is hoping it will see the environmental benefits of scrapping them for cars. In July, road user charges for vehicles under three tonnes increased about 10% to $36.07 per 1000km.
