Budget Moves On Sustainability

In the Budget Finance Minister Michael Cullen said as NZ moves to a sustainable energy future, some new and existing alternatives will need to be underpinned by research. He said $32.5m would be set aside for this purpose. The budget also allocates $23.3m operating and $22.4m capital funding over 4 years towards energy efficiency investments to assist businesses, households, motorists and consumers. The $22.4m capital goes towards insulation clean heating retrofits for state houses. The $23.3m operating funding includes $9.3m for energy saving programmes for businesses, $3m for energy performance labelling on consumer appliances, $1m for the vehicle fuel economy labelling programme, and $4m contingency is set aside for additional energy efficiency initiatives.

An addition $5m in 2008/09 through the Electricity Commission goes towards the interest-free loans programme, which provides insulation and clean heating retrofits for middle-income households. In the Ministry for the Environment vote, $11m is to be provided for the investigation, management and remediation of contaminated sites, such as the Tui mine and the Mapua contaminated sites.
